How to use Header & footer

  1. Add your PDFs

Drop one or more PDFs onto the page. With several files, use the arrows to put them in order, since Bates numbers follow that order.

  2. Type your header and footer

Fill in any of the six boxes: top left, center and right, and bottom left, center and right. Click a field such as the page number, the date or the Bates number to add it, and watch the preview.

  3. Choose options and download

Set the text size, color, distance from the edge and which pages to stamp, then click Add header & footer. Several files come back as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

What is Bates numbering?

A way to give every page in a set of documents its own number, such as ABC-000001, ABC-000002 and so on. It’s common for legal and business records, so any page can be found and cited.

Do Bates numbers continue across several files?

Yes. The numbers carry on from one file to the next in the order shown, and each download lists its first and last number, like ABC-000001 – ABC-000012.

Which fields can I use?

The page number, the file’s page count, today’s date, the file name and the Bates number. Click one to add it to the box you’re typing in.

Can I leave the cover page blank?

Yes. Choose Skip the first page. Page numbers still count every page, so the second page shows 2. You can also pick a range, like 2-10.

Will it work on rotated or cropped pages?

Yes. Text is placed on the page as you see it, so it sits along the visible edges even on sideways pages or pages with a crop box.

Is this different from Add page numbers?

Add page numbers adds just the page number in one spot. This tool lets you add any text in six spots, plus dates, file names and Bates numbers.
