Why use Utils365
Marks in the right place
The mark goes on a or e, on the o in ou, otherwise on the last vowel, as the official pinyin rules say: guì, liú, xiǎo.
Both ways
Turn ni3 hao3 into nǐ hǎo, or nǐ hǎo into ni3 hao3, for keyboards, dictionaries and spreadsheets that use numbers.
Keypad for marked letters
Tap ā, é, ǐ, ò, ǜ and the rest to type them straight into the box, with no special keyboard.
Leaves other text alone
Only real pinyin syllables change, so English words, prices and codes like mp3 in the same text stay as they are.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type pinyin tone marks?
Type each syllable followed by its tone number, 1 to 4, such as ni3 hao3, and copy the result: nǐ hǎo. You can also tap the marked letters under the text box to type them one at a time.
Which number is which tone?
1 is the high, level tone (ā), 2 the rising tone (á), 3 the dipping tone (ǎ) and 4 the falling tone (à). Use 5 or 0, or no number, for the neutral tone, as in ma1ma5 → māma.
How do I type ü?
Write v or u: instead, as in lv4 or nu:3, and it becomes lǜ or nǚ. After j, q, x and y the ü is written as a plain u in pinyin, so ju3 stays jǔ.
Where does the tone mark go?
On a or e if the syllable has one. In ou, on the o. Otherwise on the last vowel, so it’s guì and liú, not gùi or líu.
Can I turn tone marks back into numbers?
Yes. Choose Tone marks → numbers and paste your pinyin. Words written together, like Zhōngguó, are split into syllables: Zhong1guo2. You can write ü as v and number the neutral tone 5.
