Frequently asked questions
What are Chinese financial numerals (大写)?
A second set of characters for digits: 壹 贰 叁 肆 伍 陆 柒 捌 玖 拾 instead of 一 二 三 四 五 六 七 八 九 十. Simple numerals are easy to alter, as 一 can become 二 or 十 with one stroke, so banks, cheques, receipts and contracts require the financial ones.
How do I write an amount in words on a cheque?
Type the amount, such as 1234.50, and copy the Amount in words line: 壹仟贰佰叁拾肆元伍角整. Amounts with no 分 end in 整. In mainland China it often starts with 人民币, written before it.
When is 零 used?
Once for each gap of zeros inside a number, as in 一千零五 (1005) and 一万零五十 (10050). Zeros at the end aren’t said: 1200 is 一千二百. Zeros at the end of a 万 group aren’t said either: 107000 is 十万七千.
How are large numbers written?
Chinese groups digits in fours, not threes: 万 is 10,000 and 亿 is 100 million. So 12,345,678 is 一千二百三十四万五千六百七十八. Above 9,999 亿 it uses 万亿 in Simplified and 兆 in Traditional.
