Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate profit margin?
Take the cost from the selling price to get the profit, divide the profit by the selling price, then multiply by 100. Bought at 60 and sold at 100 is 40 ÷ 100 × 100 = a 40% margin.
What’s the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost. A 60 cost sold at 100 has a 40% margin but a 66.67% markup, because the same 40 profit is compared with different numbers.
How do I set a price for a target margin?
Divide the cost by 1 minus the margin as a decimal. For a 40% margin on a cost of 60, the price is 60 ÷ 0.6 = 100. Adding 40% to the cost would only give a 28.57% margin.
How do I calculate markup?
Divide the profit by the cost, then multiply by 100. To price from a markup, multiply the cost by 1 plus the markup as a decimal: 60 with a 50% markup is 60 × 1.5 = 90.
Can a profit margin be 100% or more?
Not while the item costs something. Margin is the share of the price that’s profit, so 100% would mean the cost was 0. Markup has no such limit: a 200% markup is common.
How do I convert markup to margin?
Margin = markup ÷ (100 + markup) × 100. A 50% markup is 50 ÷ 150 × 100 = a 33.33% margin. The other way, markup = margin ÷ (100 − margin) × 100.
