Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify take per sale?

With Shopify Payments in the US, online card payments cost 2.9% + 30¢ on the Basic plan, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. If you use another payment provider, Shopify adds its own fee of 2%, 1% or 0.6% on top of that provider’s fee. The monthly plan price is extra.

How much does Etsy take per sale?

Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the price and shipping, and 3% + $0.25 for payment processing in the US. On a $40 sale with free shipping that’s $4.25. If the sale came from an Offsite Ad, Etsy also takes 15%, or 12% for shops selling over $10,000 a year, up to $100 per order.

What is Amazon’s referral fee?

A percentage of the total sale price, including shipping, set by category. Most categories pay 15%, consumer electronics 8%, and clothing 5% to 17% depending on the price. There’s a minimum of $0.30 per item. FBA fulfilment fees and the monthly Professional plan aren’t included, so add fulfilment under other costs.

How much does eBay take per sale?

For most categories, eBay’s final value fee is 13.6% of the total sale, including shipping, up to $7,500, and 2.35% of anything above. There’s also a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above. Some categories, such as books or sneakers, have different rates.

Why are fees charged on shipping?

Most platforms take their percentage on everything the customer pays, so moving part of the price into shipping doesn’t lower the fee. Payment processors also charge on the full amount they collect.

Are these the fees in my country?

The presets are the published US rates in US dollars, and the month they were last checked is shown under the options. Fees differ in other countries and change from time to time. Choose Custom rate and enter the percentage and fixed fee from your platform’s own fee page to work with your rates.

How is the price to charge worked out?

The calculator finds the lowest item price at which the profit, after all fees and your costs, is at least your target share of what the customer pays. At 0% that’s your break-even price. If the fees and your target add up to 100% or more, no price works.
