How to use E-commerce profit calculator

  1. Enter your sales

Type the month’s sales, the number of orders and the share refunded. Your Shopify, WooCommerce or Etsy reports have these.

  2. Add product and shipping costs

Enter what the products cost you, as a total or a share of sales, any duties and tariffs, and what you pay to ship each order.

  3. Add fees, ads and running costs

Check the payment fee, then add ad spend and fixed costs like your store plan, apps and staff. The profit and loss updates as you type.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my e-commerce net profit?

Take your sales, subtract refunds, the cost of the products sold and any duties, shipping, payment fees, ad spend and fixed costs such as apps, software and staff. What’s left is net profit. Divide it by net sales for your net margin.

What is a good profit margin for an online store?

Many online stores have a net margin of 10% to 20%; under 5% leaves little room for a bad month. Gross margin, after product costs only, is usually 40% to 70% for shops that advertise, since ads and shipping take a large share.

What is the difference between gross and net profit?

Gross profit is net sales less what the products cost, including duties. Net profit also takes off shipping, payment fees, ads and the costs of running the store, so it’s what the business actually keeps.

What is blended ROAS or MER?

Your total sales divided by your total ad spend across every channel. Unlike the ROAS ad platforms report, it counts every sale, so it’s harder to inflate. The calculator also gives the blended ROAS you need to cover every cost.

How are refunds counted?

As money returned to customers. Refunded items are assumed to come back as stock, so their product cost isn’t lost, while payment fees usually aren’t returned. If returns can’t be resold, add their cost to product cost.

Does it work for Shopify, WooCommerce and Etsy?

Yes. It works for any store and any currency. Take sales, orders and refunds from your store’s reports, and put your plan and app subscriptions under other costs. For per-sale platform fees, see the marketplace fee calculator.
