How to use PDF to Text

  1. Add your PDFs

Drop one or more PDFs onto the page, or click to choose them.

  2. Choose page markers

Mark where each page starts with a line like “— Page 3 —”, or let the pages run on as one text.

  3. Copy or download

Click Extract text, check the result on screen, then copy it or download it as a .txt file. Several PDFs come as a ZIP.

Why use Utils365

  • Reading order kept

Words, lines and paragraphs are put back in the order you read them, not the order they happen to be stored in the file.

  • Plain text that opens anywhere

A UTF-8 .txt file works in any editor, on any device, in any language, including Chinese, Japanese and Arabic.

  • Honest about scans

Pages that are only pictures of text are listed, so you know exactly what couldn’t be extracted.

  • Private by design

Everything happens in your browser, so your PDFs are never uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Not yet. A scanned page is a picture with no text layer, so there’s no text to extract. We tell you which pages that applies to. Text recognition (OCR) is coming soon.

Will the formatting be kept?

You get the words, line breaks and paragraphs. Fonts, colours, images and exact positions aren’t part of plain text; to keep them, convert the PDF to Word instead.

What about PDFs with columns or tables?

Lines are rebuilt from where the text sits on the page, so words on one line stay in order. Side-by-side columns and table cells are kept apart with extra spaces, but may need a little tidying.

Can I extract text from several PDFs at once?

Yes. Each PDF becomes its own .txt file, and you can download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.

Can I extract text from a password-protected PDF?

Not while it’s locked. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, then extract the text.
