Frequently asked questions
What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It keeps more detail than JPG or WebP at the same file size.
Why does converting take a while?
AVIF is slow to create: expect a few seconds per photo. Viewing AVIF images is as fast as any other format.
What quality should I choose?
The default of 60% looks very close to the original for most photos. AVIF quality numbers aren’t the same as JPG’s, so lower values still look good.
Can everyone open AVIF files?
All current browsers can, and so can recent Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Some older apps still can’t, so keep a JPG for those.
